The Department offers the Master's degree in Romance Languages with a major in French, Italian*, Portuguese, or Spanish. For the thesis option, a minimum of 9 graduate seminars, a minimum of 3 hours of ROML 7300, preliminary written examinations, a Master's thesis, and an oral thesis defense are required. For the non-thesis option, a minimum of 11 graduate seminars and comprehensive written and oral examinations are required. 

Students who wish to combine the study of two languages will take a minimum of 6 courses in the major language and a minimum of 3 courses in the minor language. See the Graduate Handbook for additional information on this program.

*Most Italian M.A. Students will need to minor in a second language.

ELECTIVE COURSES (24 HOURS)

To be selected from the list of graduate courses in French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Romance Languages. Students at the M.A. level are limited to three credit hours of ROML 8000.   

THESIS WRITING

*Repeatable for maximum 18 hours credit. A minimum of 3 hours is required by the Graduate School.  3 hours

NON-THESIS OPTION

Total hours required for this degree: 33. See the requirements above, except that non-thesis students do not take ROML 7300, but take 15 hours of elective courses.
